Cyanide Introduces Styx: Master of Shadows

Cyanide Introduces Styx: Master of Shadows

I have to confess that when my good friend Thomas passed on the information for this game to me, I was not all that excited.  As I read on and did my own research, I became more and more interested.  Add the awesome screenshots and tech details and that was it, I was captivated.  Cyanide Studio is starting the year off with a bang!

Cyanide is a game development studio, based in the western suburbs of Paris, France, with offices in Montreal, Canada and Chengdu, China.  The studio was created in 2000 by eight ex-UbiSoft employees.  They have worked on titles such as Blood Bowl II, Space Hulk: Deathwing, Aarklash: Legacy, Pro Cycling Manager: Le Tour de France 2013, Dungeon Party, Impire, Of Orcs and Men, and Dogs of War Online.  Some turned out better than others, but Styx: Master of Shadows seems to have this magical quality about it.

What is Styx: Master of Shadows all about?

Styx: Master of Shadows is an infiltration game with RPG elements.  Styx: Master of Shadows has revealed the very first official screenshots and it’s looking mighty strong.

Styx is the playable character in the game who progresses through the levels of this adventure.  Styx is a Goblin who is two centuries old, the very first of all the Goblins.  He’s a master in the arts of stealth, theft and murder.  The adventure takes place in the depths of the miles-high Tower of Akenash, where Humans and Elves hide and protect the Tree, the source of the Amber.  This is where Styx has a chance to discover more about his true origins.

In the game itself you battle your way to the top of the Tower of Akenash.  It’s made up of immense levels that highlight the vertical perspective.  You will have to complete various missions with different objectives as you make your way up.  You will murder, recover information, steal precious artifacts and gradually reconstruct the puzzle that provides the knowlege of your origins.  The levels are open and objectives can be completed in various ways.  For example, you are free to choose the path you think is best to proceed, and pick the most suitable strategy to employ in order to achieve and complete your mission objectives.  Seeing as you’re a Goblin, your enemies are generally twice your size, so you’re better off eliminating them silently.  So as you can guess, stealth is your best friend.  Enemy types comprise of Humans, Elves and huge Orcs.  Guards, Soldiers and others who protect the Tower will adapt their behavior depending on your actions.  So you will have to plan your strategy well!

Styx: Master of Shadows shows elements of the RPG genre.  As you gain experience you will be able to unlock new skills, special moves and lethal weapon skills in 6 talent trees.  You will also acquire powers from the Amber flowing from the Source Tree.  Powers such as making yourself invisible to the eyes of your enemies.  You can use to it to generate clones of yourself, which adds to the variety of strategies to choose from.

The game looks great and with a bit of polish it could end up a masterpiece.  Check out the screenshots below!
