Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. The next chapter in the ever-so loved Donkey Kong Country series. This installment will let you embark on an original adventure with Donkey Kong, who partners up with Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong and the latest addition to the roster, Cranky Kong, as they battle The Snowmads, who have invaded and frozen their home, Donkey Kong Island. You will be jumping from island to island as you explore a huge variety of new environments, from lush mangroves to burning savannahs, and Donkey Kong’s frozen island. The game introduces a number of new features such as being able to swim, a dynamic camera that adds dimension and depth, and the ability to play the full game on the Wii U GamePad controller in off-TV play.
Off-TV play is a great selling point for the Wii U and having this feature implemented to such a fast-paced game suites it well. Once I actually tried out the Vita’s “remote play” feature with almost no problems I can’t help but think that it’s a shame that they didn’t do this in some capacity with the Wii U. Being able to take an awesome game like Donkey Kong Country with you on the move would probably have been a great selling point for Nintendo’s now almost flat-lining console.
During this years VGX event, a live demo of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze revealed some exciting details about the addition of Cranky Kong as a playable character. For the first time in the Donkey Kong Country series you will be able to take control of fan-favorite Cranky Kong. Cranky joins Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong as one of Donkey Kong’s partners in crime. At VGX, an event celebrating video games, Nintendo also revealed that the game will launch in North America on Feb. 21 in stores and on the Nintendo eShop.
This banana-loving, barrel-bashing hero is ready to take on the Snowmads with a little help from his friends. Do I need to say any more about Donkey Kong?
Diddy leaps into action once again to help Donkey Kong. His jetpack allows him to float over danger.
She may be new to this game, but Dixie Kong is a big help with her special spinning ponytail move.
The bearded Cranky Kong is very agile for his age. For example, he uses his cane to bounce on dangerous objects like spikes. This ability helps him access areas the other characters can’t reach. During single-player mode, Cranky rides on Donkey Kong’s back. In co-op multiplayer, a second player can control Cranky, Diddy or Dixie directly.
