Firmware 2.0 for the PS4 is turning out to be a biggie! It’ll bring about a whole host of features that have been promised since the console’s launch last year along with a couple surprises as well I’m sure. We don’t have all the details yet but this is what we know so far.
The current theme on the PS4 is only blue at the moment, which is ok but a bit basic and some of us would like to switch it up a bit, like we could on the PS3. During a pre-TGS press conference only today (01/09/2014), Sony Computer Entertainment Japan showcased an animated theme featuring mascots Toro and Kuro which you can check out below. As you can see, the background and characters move as you progress through the menus. The PS Vita will also get the same treat with some interesting backgrounds such as Danganronpa and Phatasy Star.
This feature should’ve been included from the start as uploading to Facebook and Twitter is a bit of a pain. 2.0 will add video upload to YouTube as well as a dedicated app. YouTube support will enable Gamer Attitude to bring you more exciting content to our YouTube channel much quicker.
Perhaps the most exciting feature to come with 2.0 is the much touted Share Play. Sony described it as a “virtual couch”, this is where you can stream whatever you’re playing on your PS4 to any of your PSN friends. Your friends don’t even need to own a copy of the game. It’s main use would be for multiplayer or co-operative play but one could virtually “borrow” a game from a friend! We first heard about Share Play when Sony showed off the new DualShock 4 way back in February 2013, I’m glad to see it finally being implemented.
What’s New With What’s New?
The”What’s New” feature is getting a revamp in 2.0. Sony said: “What’s New will get enhanced real-time activity through friend-of-friend suggestions, allowing instant access to friends’ and recently played games’ broadcasts, and a real name search function will also be added.” Nothing groundbreaking but still appreciated. It’ll let you keep up to date with your friends easier.
When’s It Coming?
Dunno! We have no confirmation from Sony of exactly when 2.0 will hit but it’s slated for Fall. My money is on the anniversary of the PS4 launch because it seems fitting.
There are of course still some features missing like MP3 playback, DLNA support or Game Suspension but more will be announced in the months to come so fingers crossed. Either way, 2.0 is shaping out to be pretty great! Stay tuned to Gamer Attitude for more PS4 goodness.
